I read this book around its release date in 1982, so would have been 14 or 15 years old, and absolutely loved it.
I'm pretty sure it's written for adults and children alike, either by directly experiencing the anguish of growing up - as a day-in-the-life adventure, or remembering how absurdly terrifying it was at the time - as adult comedy.
It's self-effacing, self-deprecating, witty and charming, and a great read if you like British YA humour.
